An interesting set of photos appeared on my radar today. Locals will certainly know more about this than me, but take a look at these photos of the Cilcain Decoy Command Post. As the post says:
The Cilcain decoy site consisted of this command bunker, and a series of fire troughs and baskets ignited from here which stretched over the summit of Ffrith mountain to Moel Famau, and would have drawn the bombers five mile from the Valley to drop their bombs on top of the mountains.
If you can offer any more information about the role that Moel Famau played during the war(s) I’d love to hear from you – please leave comments below!
Ah, thanks for sharing the link. Good to read a little more of the history of this site as I’ve gone by it many a time puffing and panting as I head up the hill on the back of my bike! It’s still on the OS map as a decoy post – but doesn’t look like it has long left. Shame we can’t somehow preserve that little piece of history. Or can we?
Thanks for the comment Nick – it’s funny what you can stumble upon on the web as well as in real life !
It’d be great to hear from someone who can recall the fire troughs and baskets …sounds quite interesting!
Hi, Is it true that they hid explosives and ammunition under the tower during WW2?
Hi Ray,
I’ve no idea! Lets hope another reader knows the answer
