Q. What does the Welsh name Moel Famau mean in English?
A. *Hill Of The Mothers
* I can’t speak Welsh so I’ve relied on some searching for the translation 🙂
Now, can anyone tell me why it is the hill of the mothers?

The name probably dates back to Celtic times -there are many Celtic Iron Age forts in the area. The Mothers in question being the divine mothers worshipped by the Celts.

thanks Geraint !
Mr Swale says
I disagree,
I think think that it is called Hill of mothers because it resmbles a woman’s breast,
Simple as.
All my love,
From a typical welsh man.
Lucy says
It is called Hill of the Mothers because according to Arthurian Legend (the original Welsh kind) it is the place where Morgan le Fay concieved her son, Mordred (Medrod). She was banished from Avalon (Ynys Affallach) by her father who told her that she could only return when she was pregnant. I can’t remember why! Some knight of Camelot impregnated her at the Ford of the Barking.
I can’t remeber the specifics, but I hope this helps!
